Pecan Stick Arrival

The Nursery at TyTy ships fast.  One of our orders arrived today.

  • Desirable Pecan Tree – 1-2 feet tall
  • Pawnee Pecan Tree – 1-2 feet tall
  • Brightwell Blueberry Plant – 2-3 feet tall
  • Climax Blueberry Plant – 2-3 feet tall
  • Ladyfinger Seedless Grape Vine – 2 yr
  • Red Flame Seedless Grape Vine – 2 yr

Jon works all kinds of weird days and a lot of weekends and was luckily off today so he could plant them.  This is how they arrived. Ummmm, ok.  Looks like a mangled mess of sticks to me.

After he sorted through them, this is what our pecan sticks looked like.

You can see there is a lot more root than there is on the trunk.  I think that’s a good sign.  The green is tape where the trees have been grafted.  Who knows what kind of pecan tree the rootstock is?!?
We planted the Pawnee Pecan stick in a tighter spot as it is only supposed to get to 30-35 feet.  That’s small for nut trees.

The Desirable Pecan stick is planted in a much larger open area as they can grow from 70-100 feet and have about a 75 foot spread.

You can see in the background a couple of our pine trees.  We have way too many pine trees!  They have shallow roots, are very top heave, and damage easy in the winter and wind and they really just look terrible now.  Their pine needles for mulch is quite handy though! We have no plan to remove any of our trees right now unless they fall or become an issue.  But we have decided that nothing else will be planted in this little one acre unless it produces some kind of fruit.
We do have a couple of maple trees.  My brother is contemplating tapping his and trying to make maple syrup. Hmmm we’ll see how his goes before we give that a whirl.
